Countdown Timer
Last updated: 2026-06-25
The countdown timer is a free web timer that counts down from the hours, minutes, and seconds you set to zero, ringing an alarm the moment it reaches zero.
Use it for any situation where you need to be alerted after a set time, such as cooking, workouts, studying, or presentation practice.
Countdown Timer
You must press the Start button yourself for the browser to allow the alarm sound. In background tabs the alarm may be delayed.
How to use
- Enter the time — Enter the remaining time in hours, minutes, and seconds, or use a quick-set button like 1, 3, 5, or 10 minutes.
- Start — Press Start and the timer counts down one second at a time from the time you set.
- Alert — When the remaining time reaches zero, an alarm rings to let you know time is up. Use the Pause and Reset buttons to control it.
Countdown timer use cases
A countdown timer is a timer whose numbers decrease toward a set time. When the time reaches zero it alerts you with an alarm, so you can focus on something else without watching the clock and stop or move on at exactly the right moment.
Below are countdown times commonly used in daily life. You can set them at once with the quick-set buttons.
| Situation | Suggested time |
|---|---|
| Boiling noodles or eggs | 3-7 min |
| Steeping tea or a tea bag | 2-3 min |
| A set of planks or stretching | 1-3 min |
| Presentation or speech practice | 3-5 min |
| Short break or eye rest | 5-10 min |
| Power nap | 15-20 min |
The times above are general reference examples; the right duration depends on ingredients, fitness, and circumstances. To repeat focus and breaks automatically, use the Pomodoro timer; to measure elapsed time, use the online stopwatch; and if you need an alarm that rings at a specific clock time, use the online alarm.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is the maximum time the countdown timer can be set to?
You can enter hours, minutes, and seconds separately, and the hours field accepts 0 to 99, so up to 99 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds is possible. Since the browser tab must stay open for a long time, however, it is better suited to short durations such as cooking, workouts, and studying than to very long times.
What happens if I start with 0 seconds or an empty value?
If hours, minutes, and seconds are all empty or zero, pressing Start will not begin the countdown. You must enter at least 1 second for the timer to run. Invalid characters are treated as 0 and will not start.
Will the alarm ring on time if the tab is in the background?
Browsers may throttle setInterval in background tabs to save power, so switching to another tab or app can somewhat delay the alarm. If you need an accurate time alert, keep the timer tab on screen.
The alarm sound is not playing.
Because of browser autoplay policies, you must click a button on the page at least once (interact) for sound to play. Pressing the Start button directly activates the audio. Also check that your device volume is on and not in silent mode.
